If you've been listening to the Podcast, you know this year I have not been “on track.” I've set goals, etc, but I'm just not focused. I was at Spark People and I saw where they are starting a “5K Your Way” program. Now you may be thinking, “I'm not a runner,” and thats fine. You don't have to be.
The other thing you are probably asking is “How long is a 5K?” The answer is 3.1 miles. If you are thinking, I'll never run 3 miles! You don't have to. You can just walk. You can walk/jog. You can jog. You can run. It's 5K your way.
Obviously if you've been on the couch for the last few months, you don't want to try to get up and run 3 miles tomorrow. You might shoot for the walking program. Once that is finished, you can move to the walk/jog, etc.
As I walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes a few times a week, I'm going to do the 8-week rookie running program which will slowly build up my running skills. I'm going to use the printable schedules that they have to keep on track (as well as online). For example mine says on day one to walk for 4 minutes, and then jog for 1 minute. I repeat that 3 more times for a total of a 20 minute workout. Instead of watching you watch, a great tool that I will be using is the Gym Boss (www.getgymboss.com) Where you can set up our intervals however you want for as long as you want and it will beep or vibrant when its time to switch from one to the other.
You can sign up at Spark people and you will see where they have schedules to print out and tons of additional running/walking articles to read. Here in Cleveland the snow has finally melted. Spring is on the way. It's time to get off the couch. Check it out
