Working Out a Little Bit Longer

Today I talk about how I “trick” myself into longer workouts.  It is the principle of “just a little more” over and over. When I'm on my Tony Little Gazzelle I often start with the concept of going 2 miles. Then about the .4 mile mark I start to feel it and think, “I'm never going to make it. ” However I then decide I can make it to the end of the song I'm listening to. Then I wait for the next song and if I don't like it I look at my watch. I decide I can go x amount longer. If that doesn't work, I'll look at the distance setting (and talk about going just a little further). If that doesn't work, I'll look at calories (and pick a goal to go a little longer). By going a little longer, and a little longer I eventually make it to 40 minutes.

Using my heart rate monitor I can make sure I'm in my target heart rate. Then once I'm there I try to go for an additional 20 minutes. You can calculate your target heart rate during exercise using this tool from the Mayo Clinic.

I found some free workout music in iTunes. Search for fitmusic (all one word). They provide workout music in a variety of speeds and styles.  I have a free ebook that shows you how to use your ipod as a weight loss tool.
