Consider a Treadmill

Greetings Dave and LWL members

At the moment I swear that a treadmill is the way to go. I have had my treadmill nearly a year. I used it daily until about April. Got a sick and stopped using it till October. Not sure why It took me so long to start using it again. Now very few days go by when I haven’t used my treadmill.

My treadmill is not the Rolls Royce of treadmills. However, it works for me.

It is convenient. It is always set up and ready to use.

At the moment it is summer in my part of the world, temperatures reach about 30C every day (You will have to convert this yourself).. So I am indoors protecting myself from the sun.

I can look out the window into the garden while I walk.

It has a heart rate monitor, countdown or count up in minutes and will show how many calories I have potentially burned.

While walking I can listen to podcasts. Which I have discovered make the time on the treadmill quality time. Learn something while exercising.

So I think a treadmill is the best for me.

What brand/model is your treadmill?  I've bought the cheapo equipment before that seems to break a week out of warranty.

Treadmill is best for me too. Mine is about 8 years old. I haven't always used it faithfully (in fact, months and possibly years have gone by with it unused) but last month I have been walking on it much more regularly. I also listen to podcasts and sometimes Pandora radio on iPhone.

My first job out of college was at a sporting goods store.  The one thing I made sure of when buying the treadmill was that it has something called a continous motor or an industrial motor (industrial is more for gym's).  The continous motor will run at the same pace and is not as easily affected by your weight or stride as some of the cheaper motors.  In Treadmills you will get what you pay for, so keep in mind when you are looking.  Ask your sales associate for their honest opinion, then ask them which ones they have had the fewest complaints about, then ask which one they would sell their mother.  Do NOT ask which ones not to get because they have most likely been told not to talk bad about their equipment.

My treadmill is a Healthrider that I'v had for about 4 years.  It was used regularly for the first 4 months, sporadically for the next 3 years and is now being used regularly again.  It has a feature called Ifit, which I can hook up to the audio inputs on my laptop and go to http://www.ifit.com and stream workouts to it.  Its way cool because I've learned I cannot count on myself to honestly adjust the workout.

I also keep hand weights by the treadmill so that if I'm having a more asmatic feeling day I can burn a few more calories while walking.
