I just got this via email from Lani
"Hi Dave- great podcast. I just listened to the episode where you asked if anyone had any experience with the TRX. Well, I really do not have the kind of cash they are charging for the TRX. However, there are a bunch of postings on the web for do-it-yourself models, easily found via google search. I used an example shown in a blog, and improved on it a little. I used some climber's rope. I fixed all the knots with Gorilla glue and used some small diameter 3" PVC piping for handles. I put a forged steel clamp hook at the top too, so that I could attach it virtually anywhere. I think it all costed less than 15 dollars. It works well, and I had a ton of rope left over so I made another version using shorter length of rope that I figured would be suitable for attachement to hotel room doors, ect. so I could get in a good workout while traveling.
As an aside with regards to home-made exercise equipment I also really wanted to use kettlebells as swings and windmills are supposed to really rev up the metabolism and work the core. They too are fairly pricy in my area. I found that the very large handled containers of Cascade dishwashing detergent weight about 12 lbs, and make a suitable kettlebell for most women. The shape and handles are very adaptable to standard kettlebell workouts. Best yet, they cost only a few bucks at discount stores like Target. If you ever want to increase the weight of your Cascade Kettlebell, all you have to do is strap an ankle weight around the bottle.
Anyway, there are a ton of ideas out there for home-made gym equipment, it's not necessary to drop hundreds of dollars to get a good home workout.
Thanks for the great podcast- Lani"
