When is Exercising in the Morning Bad For You?

I've read multiple books that say “throw away the scale” and “there is no need to track calories..” so I tried that approach and it failed miserably. For me personally I like to see if I'm on track or not, and I don't mind tracking calories to make sure I'm not eating too much.

There are so many things that can effect stress in your life. Family, Marriage, Job and Finances. I had about 4 out of 5 go right down the tubes as I was trying this new technique, and so I wanted to make a positive difference in my life. My health was one of the few things I could control, so I started getting up at 5:15 to exercise. This makes sense most of the time. You can't take away the exercise, you jump start your body, and you feel positive about yourself. This is mostly true.

When I got up early, I was not going to bed any earlier. This resulted in me being very tired. I had about 5 hours of sleep. What happened was when I got to work, I often went to the cafeteria to get a Mountain Dew to “pick me up.” A 20 oz bottle of Mountain Dew has about 270 calories. This negates a large chunk of the calories I burned off at 5:30.

Likewise when you're tired, its much easier to fall into a “I don't care attitude” and start eating things like peanut M&Ms (another 250 calories). The one day I noticed this I went to the gym and got on the treadmill. It took about 30 minutes to burn off a bag of M&Ms.

So when is it bad to exercise in the morning? When you didn't go to bed with enough time to get adequate rest.

  1. Hey Dave! Glad to get the new pod but not so glad to hear about the curve balls life threw you and the subsequent weight gain. Hang in their because you’re doing good work showing us that being thin and trim is not a temporary past time but Forever 🙂 It took a while but for the last 4 wks I’ve been holding at sub 200.
